The spa town is situated at 750 m above sea level at the base of the mountain reserve Rila in the southwestern part of Bulgaria. Not far from Sapareva banya are the seven famous Rila lakes and the mountain resort Panichishte.

A geyser is the greatest attraction for visitors and a symbol of the town. It is a real wonder of nature, one that is unique for the Balkans. It erupted in 1957 and since that time spouts an 18 m height column of 103 degrees Celsius mineral water every 6 seconds.

Sapareva banya has been known since ancient times under the name of Germaneya. The Thracians and the Romans built baths at the sites to make use of the hot curative mineral water. The ruins of these bathe can still be seen today.

The mineral water is very hot, with temperatures reaching 100 degrees Celsius. Mineralization is 707mg/l, and the water is rich in hydro-sulfide and met-silica acid, containing hydrocarbon, sulfate and sodium ions. The resort specializes in the treatment of diseases of the peripheral nervous system, the respiratory system, rheumatic diseases, gynecological disorders, and skin diseases.
