The little resort town of Birštonas, population 3,200, nestled in a river bend in the Great Nemunas Bends Regional Park, has provided relief for travellers throughout its history. In its early years Birštonas was a favourite hunting ground of Grand Duke Vytautas and his guests from around Europe. In 1846 the very first cure of a patient by means of the local mineral waters was officially confirmed, although the waters had been in use for therapeutic purposes for many years before that. Now Birštonas is famous not only for the curative effects of the mineral waters in general use in its two spa hospitals, but also for the fact that it is the home of a small factory with the oldest tradition of mineral water bottling in Lithuania.

This tiny, immaculate and peaceful resort town offers visitors picturesque views of everything contained in the Great Nemunas Bends Regional Park that meanders around Birštonas for 59 km. Whether travelling by bicycle or by canoe, visitors are struck by the sight of spectacular escarpments revealing the ancient history of the Earth, or rest under centuries-old oak trees, before climbing the chain of fortified hills along the rivers. The small resort town is also famous for the sporting events that attract thousands of fans to strongman contests, hot air ballooning fairs, rowing marathons and so on. Birštonas is home to the oldest International Jazz Festival in Lithuania, held in March every other year.

Birštonas welcomes everybody looking for a quiet place in picturesque surroundings with a rich cultural life.
